The List

We received an email from Shanghai (our new school there) a few days ago and it listed everything to bring (because you can't get it over there). Marcelle and I looked at each other and nearly said in unison: "We'll need a shipping container!" Shoes (large sizes), toiletries, clothing in general (large sizes), sun screen, some office supplies... It was endless. And we are not using a shipping container! In fact, we're bringing one duffel bag apiece.

So if we look a little ratty in photographs -- and we're barefoot....

I wonder if Wal-Mart online can deliver your orders to their Supercenters over there.

I'm making my girlfriend sit here with me and give me some ideas in hope to aide you on your Great Adventure. She is telling me over and over again you will want a shipping container. Keep in mind it's been 12 years since she lived in Hangzhou, and obviously things have changed.
You will want chips, dip, food and more food, pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. You will get a little homesick and will want to bring a little America with you. Most things you'll want will be imported and very expensive, even Hershey candy bars.
Buy bikes as soon as you get there and have someone show you the ropes. Be brave it will be intimidating and scary at first, but then it's fun,in a crazy Holy S*** kind of way.
Bring clothing for all 4 seasons, Tara moved in September during Monsoon season. Taxi rides will never be the same again, especially when they drive on the sidewalks with the bicyclists.
Bring a couple of strong power adapters, and dvd's. I imagine you'll have a laptop.Try to bring all your clothing, buying western clothing is costly and local styles are a little drab.
Travel around as much as possible and see the country. Go to Beijing for at least a week, check out West lake in Hangzhou. Marco Pollo called it the most beautiful lake in the world.
The Temples are amazing and the people are super friendly. They'll want to learn English, as you should try and learn as much Chinese as you can. That plane ride should take awhile.
If she thinks of anything else, will post it.

You might want to try posting to Marjorie M Liu website. She just recently came home from staying 6 weeks in Shanghai. As she is half-Chinese, she would be an expert in helping you in packing choices and letting you know what you REALLY need to go there.
